Campfire: Hustle w/the Caravan Crew

w/the Caravan Crew

Join the Caravan Crew for a no-holds-barred discussion of what the writing life is REALLY all about: HUSTLE.

Much as we love the art and craft of writing itself, the plain fact is that it takes work - lots of it - to get our writing out into the world, and that means hustle. The Caravan instructors have nearly 100 years of combined experience as working writers, and each of them brings insight and experience from a different area of the publishing world. We’ll gather to share some truths, as well as our tips, tricks, and proven strategies for making the work of writing…well, work.

Self-Edit Like a Pro

w/Holly Starley

As writers, we have an idea, a draft, a story to tell. Fantastic! What next? How do we go from draft to publication ready? How do we bring our vision to the page? We writers also tend to cringe at the word “edit.” But as J. Russell Lynes says, “No author dislikes to be edited as much as he dislikes not to be published.” Becoming one’s own best first editor is critical. (Bonus: It frees up the first drafter in us to go deep and wild.) Through expert advice, guided exercises, and strategies used by professional developmental and line editors, practice skills that will enable you to shape your writing from start to polished works. Bring a work in progress or work with the starts we’ll develop in session.

Cut It! Start, End, & Let Go What’s Not Serving Your Writing

w/Holly Starley

Do you know what's not serving your writing? Does killing those darlings hurt? Cutting words you’ve labored over isn’t easy. But it can be the difference between pretty good and stunning work. Practice beginnings, endings, & knowing what’s not serving your writing. Bring a work in progress or work with the drafts we’ll develop in session. Leave with less—in the best way.

Submission Sweatshop! Everything You Need to Know about Getting Your Work into the World

w/Holly Starley & Paul Corman-Roberts

We write for many reasons. Getting our work into the world is by no means least among them. But how? Magazines, contests, agents, editors, pitching, anthologies, blogs, Substack, open calls, reading times, reading fees, grants, residencies, fellowships—it’s a lot to wrap your mind around. Join two working writers for a breakdown of the many routes to publication, guidance on which might work best for you and your projects and when, practical systems for keeping your publication efforts in order and ongoing, and, of course, guided exercises to get you going.
